I heard a local imam speaking here at my campus a couple of years ago, and I asked him whether a Muslim could believe evolutionary theory. His answer was, first, that "A Muslim can believe anything!" This struck me as, oh, a tad disingenuous. He then proceeded to assure us that he, personally, did not accept that humans are related to apes. Is this a common approach among Muslim apologists-to announce a faux liberalism and, in the same breath, a vehement rejection?

I haven't run into this sort of thing, not often enough to remember anyway. Maybe the man was confused.
