When superstition gets dangerous

I do run into this reasoning from religious right circles: "God promised he wouldn't wipe us out in quite that way, so global warming can't be happening (or harmful)." It's infuriating to see its potential to influence public policy. I'm sorry, but these particular superstitions are dangerous. Unless by some wild stroke of luck they're correct, they threaten to take the saner part of the population down with them.

I went to a climate conference a few years ago & attended a talk by one of the scientists from the IPCC. I was impresed by his grasp of the subject and his presentational skills - right up until the moment he said that "of course Global Warming won't get *that* bad because GOD wouldn't let it."

At which point I was (luckily for him) speechless.....

This should be posted in the WTF category. It terrifies that this is an actual elected official. More proof as to just how bad the understanding of science and the education or our youth in this country has become.

"I believe the bible is the infallible word of God" Translation: "I am a fucking moron".

But of course the congressman has a point. Global warming will not "destroy the earth" meaning the big rock orbitting around the sun. Nobody has suggested that it would literally do that. But it can significantly alter the ecosystems that human societies depend on.

Who is this person, and where is he speaking?

Sorry -- never mind. I missed it. He is Illinois Representative John Shimkus and he is testifying at the U. S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment . March 25,2009. (It was at the very beginning of the video.)

If you think about it, religious belief is responsible for a lot more problems in detail than the more prominent ones like this in peoples everyday lives. It is responsible for superiority complex, inferiority complex, envy, pride, hate and lots more. Im happy that I am free from religion.
