Some said they were down on the Project because James Tabor was prominently associated with it (he's supposedly a crank historicist), while others said they were down on the Project because Frank Zindler was invited to give a paper (he's supposedly a crank mythicist). This is all rather ironic, since being down on the Project for being too sympathetic to historicity and mythicism entails a rather obvious contradiction, and belies instead the fact that the Project isn't "too sympathetic" to either. Citing evidence that we're willing to hear out scholars of wildly diverse perspectives only confirms the validity of what we're doing.LINK

Richard Carrier's Notes on the Jesus Project
Richard Carrier recently posted on hig blog his take on a recent conference of the Jesus Project. Based on Carrier's description, it sounds like a very interesting scholarly project indeed. One particular paragraph in Carrier's blog made me chuckle:

It's such a disheartening conversation going on over there. Rick really has his work cut out for him.
Come on, folks...is there already any doubt as to what the "conclusions" of this "scholarly investigation" will be?

It's conceivable that Rick could unravel his own preliminary conclusions by fact checking the claims he thinks he can support after years of research on the subject. I know of no reason why he would say "F*ck it" in the face of refuting himself given how much his reputation could be tarnished by being dishonest for a quick buck. Theists (and even lots of atheists) will be on everything he says in the book like vultures and I imagine he will be waiting for them, guns loaded.
I supported him because I think he can make the best argument one way or the other. You can make accusations, but really at the end of the day, what do your accusations matter in the face of a good argument?
The real question is, is there any doubt Rick will make a good argument? And the answer is no.
